Narratives for Auckland – David Shand & Bill McKay
The Fabian Society invites you to hear two eminent speakers reflecting on the promise made by the Royal Commission for Auckland and the prospect for a liveable urban landscape on Tuesday 30th July, Lecture Theatre 260/209. Owen Glen Building University of Auckland at 6.30pm.

David Shand is An accountant (FCPA) with degrees in accountancy and economics. Senior positions in Australian federal and state governments including Queensland Public Service Commissioner and Deputy Secretary of the Department of Treasury Victoria. 13 years World Bank, International Monetary Fund and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Held major governance roles as former chair of the TertiaryEducation Commission, Director of Meridian Energy. Memberof the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance and chair of the 2007 Independent Commission of Inquiry into Rates. Board member of the Auckland City Mission, a trustee of Musica Sacra, New Zealand Portrait Gallery.
Bill McKay is a Member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, Society of Architectural Historians Australia and New Zealand, DOCOMOMO New Zealand and the Auckland Architectural Association Based in the School of Architecture and Planning. Writes extensively on New Zealand architecture, has received a New Zealand Institute of Architects President’s Award, named Best Architectural Writer by Urbis magazine. Is a regular critic of architecture and commentator on urban design issues as well as being very involved in local Auckland issues. He practises both architecture and public sculpture with current projects in Auckland and the Chatham Islands. Working on ‘Cloudland’, a history of New Zealand architecture that focuses on the buildings that most of us live and work in, and is editing ‘Awkward City’, a collection of essays about the history and development of Auckland.
