Two attempts were made to remove the Auckland Suffrage Memorial from what is now known as Te Hā o Hine Place by the "Grand Poobahs of Auckland's art world" (as Brian Rudman called them). It took the campaigning by many to ensure the Memorial not only was given a new lease of life with the upgrade of Upper Khartoum Place but has now been designated as a Category 1 Historic Place. Former Councillor Cathy Casey led the political side of the campaign supported by many of her City Vision colleagues over the years. ![]()
The story of the memorial, designed and built by artists Jan Morrison and Claudia Pond Eyley for the 1993 suffrage centennial, and the campaigns to save it are all told in "Women Triumphant" by Cathy and Megan Hutchings. The book was launched last night at the Ellen Meville Centre with both artists as guest speaker. ![]()
The book can be purchased at the Women's bookshop on Ponsonby Road.
