Your Community Voice
In 2016 you voted for a strongly community-focused, City Vision team, on the Albert-Eden Local Board. Here’s a report back on what Graeme Easte, Glenda Fryer, Peter Haynes, Jessica Rose and Margi Watson have achieved in that time. We are bringing our wide-ranging skills, experience and vision to work for you and your community.
Parks and open space
- Opened a BMX track and skatepark at Waterview Reserve
- Renewed the netball and tennis courts at Windmill Reserve
- Completed the installation of Australasia’s first community hybrid sports fields at Nixon and Gribblehirst Parks
- Opened the popular playground and ‘Learn to Ride’ at Potters Park
- Planning for the diversification of sport and recreation at Chamberlain Park in addition to it remaining a home for golf (more background here from Chair Peter Haynes)
- Construction of a new all-weather path around Coyle Park
- Completion of 1 new field and planning for upgrades to 2 fields and new facilities at Phyllis Reserve
- Park improvements in: Coyle, Anderson, Alan Wood, Delphine Fowlds, Louis Adolphus Reserve, Heron, Nicholson, Withiel Thomas, Gribblehirst, Windmill and Roy Clements Treeway
Environment
- Funded community groups restoring the Te Auaunga/Oakley and Waititiko/Meola Creeks
- Sponsored a Moth Plant Eradication Programme for school students
- Restoring rock forest at Oakley Creek, Almorah Rd and Thomas Withiel Reserve, and restoration planting at Windmill Reserve
- Future Giants planting completed
- Trialled a Pollution Prevention Programme in Morningside
- Developed a strategic plan for Te Auaunga/Oakley Creek
Sustainability
- Co-developed a case for a resource recovery centre for the residents of the central isthmus
- Supporting the establishment of a Bike Hub
- Funding the Eco-Neighbourhoods programme to bring locals together and support new ways of living.
Village and town centres
- Completion of the award-winning Sandringham Reserve to become a focal point for the Sandringham Village
- Completion and opening of the Mt Albert Town Centre upgrade.
- Planning underway for Greenlane, Sandringham and Pt Chevalier Town Centre improvements
Heritage
- Installed signage to tell the story of Sir Algernon Withiel Thomas in the Withiel Thomas Reserve
- Opened the Waterview Heritage area and bridge , the site of Auckland’s second flour mill
Community empowerment
- Supported community-led planning in Sandringham
- Funding for community groups on projects like the Bright Street butterfly mural
- Provide leases for buildings to community groups
- Funded more than $430,000 in grants to community groups and organisations delivering services and programmes in the local area (eg the Mount Albert Playgroup grant for toys)
Local economic development
- Actively supported 9 business associations and groups
- Established the Albert-Eden Business Awards to encourage business excellence
Events and arts
- Helped fund the Albert-Eden Schools Cultural Festival, Sandringham Spring Festival, Brazil Day Fiesta, Carols at Potters, Movies in Parks, Big Gay Out
- Funded Neighbours Day events for communities across Albert-Eden
- Planning for new Public Art installation in Potters Park and Heron Park
- Support community arts through a funded Arts Broker programme
Transport
- Opening of the, long campaigned for Waterview Shared Path which is now used by more than 1,000 people on weekdays, with even more on the weekends.
- Working to ensure Albert-Eden people can move around safely and easily by funding crossings, signage and roading improvements
- Worked with Auckland Transport to deliver a major traffic calming project between Carrington and St Lukes Road.
- Updated our vision for Greenways and path developments for 2018 and beyond
- Co-funded the Heron Park to Holly St Walkway
Children and Young People
- Funding swimming lessons for children
- Support our schools on their Enviroschools journey
- Upgrades to playgrounds in Eric Armishaw, Braemar, Murray Halberg, Gribblehirst, Nixon, Harwood, Melville, Nicholson, Centennial Park, Anderson
