Councillors and the Mayor have voted unanimously to support a Private Public Partnership funding model to deliver the Skypath project. This now clears the way for a walking and cycling connection to finally be built on the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Cr Cathy Casey was successful with adding two amendments at the end of the five hour debate. One supporting dogs on leash to use the Skypath (subject to health and safety requirements) and the other to have under fives free with a paying adult.
Cr Mike Lee said during the debate that SkyPath was “the City Rail Link for walking and cycling”, referring to the way in which the Harbour bridge connection will open up the entire cycling network in the same was as the CRL in relation to the train network.
City Vision has been a long time supporter of Skypath and is delighted at the decision. Detailed design will now get underway. http://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/82334719/auckland-council-vote-yes-on-skypath
There are many people to thank who have worked over many years to make Skypath a reality in particular Bevan Woodward who has led the campaign for almost ten years (full list detailed here )
