Following a community liaison meeting on Tuesday 20th January attended by over 60 locals concerned at the destruction of six 80 year old pohutukawa trees on Great North Road to make way for an additional turning lane on to SH 16, Waitemataā Local Board Chair, Shale Chambers spoke with 3News and Radio NZ
“The community own that park, car park and six pohutukawa trees, and ultimately, the local board has delegated responsibility for granting land owner consent for Auckland Transport to enter upon the land to remove the trees,”
The Board has strongly opposed the removal of the trees though the Notice of Requirement hearing.
