Richard Northey was elected to the Waitemata Local Board as a City Vision Candidate in October 2016. He holds the Arts, Culture and Events Portfolio and is the Associate Portfolio Holder for Community and Facilities.  He is a Committee Member of the Karangahape Road Business Association, the Ponsonby Community Centre and the Inner City Network and is Deputy-chair of the University of Auckland Society. He offered himself as a candidate for the Waitemata Local Board based on a great deal of experience and achievements on the Auckland City Council and in Parliament in strategic thinking, priority setting, communication and problem solving in local governance.

He and Robyn live in the Hereford Apartment on the corner of Hopetoun Street and Hereford Street. He has lived in the Waitemata Board area in Clifton Road, Churton St Parnell, Wanganui Ave, Dunedin St, Albany Road and Ardmore Road. He has been on the National Council of Local Government New Zealand, Deputy-Chair of the Ponsonby-Herne Bay Community Committee, a member of the Council’s CBD Advisory Board and of Council’s Seniors Advisory Panel.  He chairs the Problem Gambling Foundation, the Auckland Community Housing Trust and Labour’s Infrastructure and Environment Policy Committee.

Richard Northey was born in Hamilton but has lived in Auckland all his adult life. He represented Eden in Parliament 1984-90, Onehunga 1993-96, where he was the Opposition Spokesperson on Local Government and then Maungakiekie-Tamaki on the City Council 1998-2010 and the Auckland Council 2010-13. He is married to Robyn, an Auckland District Health Board member, and has three children and eight grandchildren. He is interested in astronomy, politics, aerobics, cricket, rugby, local history, community development activities, fishing, reading, films and theatre.
