Richard Northey was first elected to the Waitematā Local Board as a City Vision Candidate in October 2016.  He was re-elected in 2019 and 2022, servicing as Chair for the 2019-2022 term. Richard has the local board portfolios of Community organisations and facilities; and is the Board rep on the Ponsonby Community Centre; Central City Network; Community Liaison Groups for the Central Rail Link; City Centre Residents Group’s liaison; CABx, and Karangahape Road Business Association and represents the central isthmus boards on the Joint Governance Working Group.

Richard chairs the University of Auckland Society and the Auckland Community Housing Board and is on the Boards of the Problem Gambling Foundation of NZ, Asian Family Services and the Labour Party’s Policy Council.

Richard  was born in Hamilton but has lived in Auckland all his adult life. He represented Eden in Parliament 1984-90, Onehunga 1993-96, where he was the Opposition Spokesperson on Local Government and then Maungakiekie-Tamaki on the City Council 1998-2010 and the Auckland Council 2010-13. He is married to Robyn and has three children and eight grandchildren. He is interested in astronomy, politics, aerobics, cricket, rugby, local history, community development activities, fishing, reading, films and theatre.
