City Vision and Roskill Community Voice members on the Albert- Eden, Puketapapa and Waitemata Local Boards are committed to waste management to reduce potentially valuable material going to landfill and are supporting work in piloting a joint community- led resource recovery centre. A business case is currently being prepared for the establishment of a facility that will provide a model for a future resource recovery network across the Auckland region.  Work is underway to identify a suitable site that can serve all three board areas.  The project is supported by our local transition town groups – Grey Lynn 2030 Waste Away, Grow Sandringham and Pt Chev TT who are all part of the Auckland Community Zero Waste Alliance.

This is an exciting opportunity to create local jobs, minimise waste, teach new skills and make a signficant contribution to the vision of Auckland becoming zero waste city.  It is also complementary to the Council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan adopted in June 2012 that will introduce standard collection services and charges across the region  including the introduction of an organic collection service.   More details about the plan here.
