Media Release: 8 March 2011
Peter Haynes, City Vision chair of Albert-Eden Local Board announces that the Board has moved to establish a “Sustainable Albert-Eden Advisory Board” to provide the Local Board with expert advice on local-level sustainability initiatives and to assist in developing a sustainability plan for the Local Board’s area.
“Like Len Brown, we are keen to adopt the ‘eco-city’ that Waitakere City developed across the new super city”, said Peter. “There have been many local sustainability initiatives that we want to continue and build on across our Board’s area. We want to complement the region-wide programmes with a bottom up approach,”
“Groups such as the Mt Eden Village People and Transition Town Pt Chevalier already organise a range of activities at the local level. These include community gardening, fruit tree planting, green shopping, waste recycling, and community purchasing, along with various educational workshops.”
The Advisory Board will comprise up to six local experts and the Local Board’s environmental management spokespeople, Graeme Easte and Peter Haynes.
“We are calling for nominations for the Advisory Board from interested local experts in sustainable development at local level by 31 March,” said Dr Haynes. He also noted that the Advisory Board will not require additional resources, as members will not be remunerated and it will not require externally sourced advisory or policy-making expertise.
