Road Safety Week 2023 has raised awareness of our road safety heroes and the steps that everyone can take to stop needless deaths and injuries year-round. At current rates of road harm, over the next five years one in two Aucklanders is expected to be personally connected to someone seriously injured or killed. City VIsion supports evidence-based, best practice road safety that aims towards “Vision Zero” that was adopted for Auckland in 2019. Vision Zero is an ethics-based approach that puts human life ahead of any other benefits, and has now been adopted around the world. The key principle is that, given that people inevitably make mistakes that result in crashes, we should strive to make those crashes “survivable”. You should be able to walk away, rather than be carried away by first responders. We are working to make our communities safer for everyone especially for kids travelling to school with new pedestrian crossings especially near schools, safer speeds, and improvements to footpaths. ...
